Isla del Sol

Aug. 19 & 20 - Isla del Sol : A 2 hour boat ride from the shores of Copacabana is the Isla de Sol in Lake Titicaca. This island holds particular importance to the Inca as it the legendary birthplace of the sun. Our boat dropped us off on the north side of the island from where we took a pleasant walk to visit the ruins Chincana. In route to these maze like ruins we passed the sacred stone formation, Rock of the Puma (if look closely can view a puma´s head). After spending time at the ruins (and trying to understand the Spanish explanation of this area´s importance), we started off on a leisurely, but hilly, hike towards the southern end of the island where we planned to spend the night. It should be noted that due to the altitude even a few minutes of hiking made us amazingly breathless and hearts pounding.

Sunset on Isla del Sol

Our hostel was perfectly located near the top of a hill overlooking Lake Titicaca, to the west, which allowed for a relaxing view of the setting sun. Only a short walk to the opposite side of the hill, allowed me the attempt to see the rising sun in the morning. Unfortunately the sun was mostly blocked by the mountains surrounding the lake. Despite this it was a good experience to be up before other people and see a few locals herding their packs of donkeys and llamas to various destinations. Overall, the visit to the island was very idyllic and a place that we would easily recommend to go to relax with great scenery.
